A popular Croydon bar is set to close its doors for good after more than 13 years at the heart of the town's nightlife.

Slug & Lettuce Croydon, on Park Lane, has announced that it will shut permanently on September 12.

The venue broke the news in a video posted to TikTok, telling customers it was “with heavy hearts” that the bar will close.

The announcement said: “It is with heavy hearts that we have to share the news that Slug & Lettuce Croydon will be closing for good.

“Our last day of trade will be Saturday 12th September. We want to thank all of our amazing guests that we've had over the years and the memories we have all made will last a lifetime.

“It's gutting news, and we wish you all the best.”

The bar is now holding a clearance sale ahead of its closure, with everything being offered at 50 per cent off while stocks last.

Customers have been encouraged to visit the venue during its final weeks.

The statement added: “With that being said, we are having a clearance sale with everything being 50 per cent off, while stocks last.

“Please come in and join us for the time we have left.”

Slug & Lettuce has been based at the Park Lane site since 2013, when the venue was transformed from the former Bar Ten.

At the time, Stonegate Pub Company announced an investment of more than £85,000 in the venue and said three new jobs would be created as part of the refurbishment.

The revamped bar featured a new cocktail menu and regular music nights as part of the Slug & Lettuce brand.

Over the years, the Croydon venue has become known for its cocktails, food, brunches and late-night events.

Its current offering includes bottomless brunch, afternoon tea, lunch and evening food, alongside cocktails and other drinks.

The venue's website has continued to advertise events in the weeks leading up to its closure, including a Slugfest brunch on August 29 and 30 and a Disney Channel versus Nickelodeon event on September 5.

The closure announcement comes just days before some of those events are due to take place. It is not yet known what will happen to the Park Lane site after Slug & Lettuce closes.

The company has also not given a reason for the decision to shut the Croydon venue.

Slug & Lettuce is operated by Stonegate Group, which owns and operates pubs, bars and other hospitality venues across the UK.

The closure will leave customers looking for alternatives in and around Croydon town centre.

Riff Raffs on George Street, Memory Box Cocktail Bar on the High Street and CR1 Bar & Lounge on South End offer cocktails and drinks, while The Dog and The George provide more traditional pub options.

Slug & Lettuce's Croydon venue will serve its final customers on September 12, bringing more than 13 years at Park Lane to an end.

A spokesperson for Slug & Lettuce, Croydon said: “The hospitality sector continues to face significant challenges.

"After careful consideration, and despite our best efforts, the site is no longer commercially viable and we have taken the difficult decision to close Slug & Lettuce, Croydon.

"We would like to thank our hard-working team for their commitment and dedication.

"We would also like to thank our guests and the local community for their support over the years.”
