The Morrisons store in Sutton has now been closed for two years, with residents still waiting to find out when the supermarket will return.
The store, based at 31 High Street, closed on July 2, 2024, for what was initially described as “essential maintenance”.
At the time, Morrisons said the closure was temporary, but no reopening date was given.
In October 2024, the supermarket confirmed that “significant” issues had been discovered at the site, meaning the store would remain closed for an “extended period”.

The lack of updates led to growing uncertainty among shoppers, with some questioning whether Morrisons would ever return.
In November 2024, Sutton Council confirmed that no planning applications had been submitted to change the building’s use, suggesting the site remained under Morrisons’ control.
The store remained closed throughout Christmas 2024, leaving shoppers to use alternative supermarkets elsewhere in Sutton.
By July 2025, the branch had been shut for a full year and was still listed on the Morrisons website as “temporarily closed”.
During that time, the Sutton Guardian asked readers what they wanted to see happen to the empty High Street site.
Many residents said they wanted Morrisons to return, with shoppers highlighting the importance of having a supermarket at the top end of the town centre.
Some said they missed the store’s fresh food, car park and convenience, while others suggested alternative retailers including B&M, Home Bargains, Aldi and Tesco.
In September 2025, after months of silence, Morrisons confirmed that the original store would not reopen.
Instead, the supermarket said it plans to demolish the existing building and build a brand-new store on the site.
A Morrisons spokesperson said: "Over the past year, we have undertaken a comprehensive review of our Morrisons store in Sutton to ensure we can best serve the local community in the years to come.
"Given the significant structural repairs required in order for us to reopen, we are now intending to build a new store on the site."
The company said it was in discussions with potential development partners and would explore different options for the site.
However, Morrisons has not yet confirmed when construction will begin or when the new store could open.
The announcement was welcomed by Sutton and Cheam MP Luke Taylor, who described it as a “vote of confidence” in the High Street.
He said residents and local businesses had made clear they wanted Morrisons to remain in Sutton.
In early 2026, the first visible change at the site took place when Morrisons' signage was removed from the building, leaving the frontage blank after more than 18 months of closure.
It is not yet clear whether the removal of the branding signals the start of redevelopment work.
Since January, there have been no visible changes to the site, and Morrisons has yet to issue a further update.
