A Surrey dance teacher who sexually abused multiple children over more than three decades has been jailed for 21 years.
John Maddox, from Farnham, preyed on young victims aged between eight and 15, targeting them through family connections and the dance school he ran.
The now 83-year-old, who operated the Gardenia School of Dance, used his position of trust to exploit children, with many of the offences taking place at his home and involving both boys and girls.
His crimes, which spanned from 1972 to 2004, came to light after victims came forward to report the abuse.
At Guildford Crown Court on May 5, he was found guilty of 20 offences relating to seven victims.
Several of those impacted described the long-term effects the abuse had on their lives.
One said: “He was the adult.
“He was the teacher.
“He was the one entrusted with our care and safety.
“Instead of protecting us, he abused the trust placed in him and used his position of authority to harm the very children he was meant to guide and protect.”
Another victim said their love of dance had been “tainted”, adding: “There are certain songs that I cannot listen to without being reminded of him and what happened… the idea of dancing with a male instructor now makes me feel uncomfortable.”
A third said: “One selfish, cruel man has altered the lives of so many, for so long.”
Maddox was sentenced at the same court to 21 years in prison after being convicted of multiple counts of indecent assault against children.
Detective Sergeant Brendan Roberts said: “John Maddox was a sexual predator who preyed on children.
“He manipulated and took advantage of situations to sexually abuse his victims, through family connections or the dance school he ran.
“I would like to praise the victims for their courage in coming forward and giving evidence to help ensure that Maddox is behind bars where he belongs.”
