The green branding has been taken down from the building at 31 High Street, leaving the store blank more than 18 months after it first closed.
The Sutton branch of Morrisons initially shut, citing “essential maintenance” works.
At the time, the retailer did not confirm a reopening date.
The store remained closed throughout summer 2024, with no further updates issued.
By October 2024, Morrisons confirmed that “significant” issues had been discovered at the site and that the store would remain closed for an “extended period” while options were explored.
In November 2024, Sutton Council confirmed it had not received any planning applications to change the building’s use, after speculation from residents that the site could be converted into flats.
The supermarket did not reopen in time for Christmas 2024, forcing shoppers to use alternative stores in the area.
By July 2025, the store had been closed for a year and was still listed online as “temporarily closed”.
Two months later, Morrisons confirmed it would not reopen the existing store and instead intends to build a new supermarket on the site following a comprehensive review.
A spokesperson for Morrisons said: “Over the past year, we have undertaken a comprehensive review of our Morrisons store in Sutton to ensure we can best serve the local community in the years to come.
“Given the significant structural repairs required in order for us to reopen, we are now intending to build a new store on the site.”
Liberal Democrat MP for Sutton and Cheam Luke Taylor welcomed the plans at the time, describing them as a “vote of confidence” in the high street.
It is not yet clear whether the removal of the signage signals preparatory works ahead of redevelopment.
