The Department for Education (DfE) has released data on how students in Croydon’s secondary schools performed in their GCSEs.
The data includes each school’s Attainment 8 score, which shows how well pupils performed across eight key GCSE subjects.
These include English and maths, three “EBacc” subjects such as science, history, geography or a language, and three other approved GCSEs.
English and maths are double-weighted, meaning they count twice as much as other subjects when the score is worked out.
Each GCSE grade is turned into points, with a grade 9 worth nine points, a grade 8 worth eight points, and so on.
The highest possible Attainment 8 score is 90, which would mean top grades across all eight subjects.
These scores help show how strongly schools are performing across a broad range of subjects, rather than just focusing on English and maths alone.
Below are Croydon’s secondary schools, listed with their Attainment 8 score and the percentage of pupils achieving grade 5 or above in English and maths.
Special schools are not included.
Coloma Convent Girls’ School recorded an Attainment 8 score of 57.3, with 62.4 per cent of pupils achieving grade 5 or above in English and maths.
Coombe Wood School achieved an Attainment 8 score of 52.6, with 55.4 per cent of pupils reaching grade 5 or above in English and maths.
Harris City Academy Crystal Palace recorded a score of 52.0, with 56.4 per cent of students achieving grade 5 or above in English and maths.
Al-Khair Secondary Girls recorded an Attainment 8 score of 51.4, with 40 per cent of pupils achieving grade 5 or above in English and maths.
Fidelis College achieved a score of 50.8, with 55.6 per cent of students reaching grade 5 or above in English and maths.
Riddlesdown Collegiate recorded an Attainment 8 score of 50.7, with 54.7 per cent of pupils achieving grade 5 or above in English and maths.
The BRIT School for Performing Arts and Technology achieved a score of 50.0, with 53.8 per cent of students reaching grade 5 or above in English and maths.
Harris Academy South Norwood recorded an Attainment 8 score of 47.9, with 43.5 per cent of pupils achieving grade 5 or above in English and maths.
Harris Academy Purley achieved a score of 46.5, with 48.4 per cent of pupils reaching grade 5 or above in English and maths.
Norbury High School for Girls recorded an Attainment 8 score of 46.3, with 44.3 per cent of students achieving grade 5 or above in English and maths.
Woodcote High School achieved a score of 46.1, with 46.3 per cent of pupils reaching grade 5 or above in English and maths.
A school’s Attainment 8 score or percentage does not tell the full story about its overall quality.
Factors such as selectivity, student numbers and the academic starting point of pupils can all influence results.
For example, some schools admit pupils based on academic ability, while others take students of all abilities, which can lead to very different averages.
