New data from the Office for National Statistics has revealed how long women living in Sutton can expect to live on average.
The ONS has published life expectancy estimates for every lower-tier local authority in the UK, covering the three-year period from 2022 to 2024.
In the London Borough of Sutton, female life expectancy at birth stood at 84.5 years during this period.
This was a slight increase from the previous three-year period of 2019 to 2021, when female life expectancy in the borough was 84.1 years.
Across London, the average life expectancy for women is 83.6 years, meaning Sutton sits above the capital average.
Despite only modest growth, Sutton continues to perform well compared with many neighbouring south London boroughs.
In Croydon, female life expectancy was recorded at 84.3 years, while Merton reported an average of 85.0 years.
Women living in Kingston upon Thames can expect to live longer, with a life expectancy of 85.4 years, placing the borough among the highest in south London.
By comparison, Sutton sits around the middle of London boroughs, performing better than some neighbours but below the capital’s highest-ranking areas.
Life expectancy is influenced by a range of factors including deprivation, housing, employment, access to healthcare, and long-term health conditions.
Sutton generally experiences lower levels of deprivation than several neighbouring boroughs, which is reflected in more consistent health outcomes across the borough.
Public health experts have previously highlighted that life expectancy figures reflect decades of social and economic conditions, rather than short-term changes.
The ONS statistics are used by local authorities and health bodies to inform public health planning, target early intervention services, and address long-standing inequalities across communities.
