The most common reasons for parking tickets in Sutton have been revealed.

Information supplied by Sutton Council following a Freedom of Information request submitted by YourLocalGuardian has revealed the main reasons why parking tickets were issued between April 1, 2023, to April 30, 2024.

In total, 41,752 Penalty Charge Notices (PCNs) were issued in Sutton during that period.

13,163 parking tickets were issued to drivers who parked in residents’ or shared-use parking places or zones without clearly displaying the required permit, voucher, or pay-and-display ticket issued for that specific location, making it the most common reason.

The second most common reason was when drivers parked in a restricted street during hours when parking is prohibited, with 7,607 parking tickets issued.

The third most common reason was when drivers parked their vehicles with one or more wheels on a footpath or any part of a road other than a carriageway - with 4,972 tickets.

Parking in a pay-and-display bay without clearly displaying a valid pay-and-display ticket was the fourth most common reason, with 2,997 tickets issued.

The next was because drivers parked in a restricted street where waiting and loading/unloading restrictions are in force, with 1,505 tickets issued.

The information supplied by Sutton Council also revealed the least common reasons why parking tickets were issued during that time.

The rarest reason was when a vehicle parked in an area after the paid parking time expired, and only one parking ticket was issued for this.

Parking in a zone where the road is elevated to match a pavement, bike lane, or grassy area, and parking a commercial vehicle (a vehicle that transports goods) overnight on a restricted street were the joint second rarest reasons, with just four tickets issued.

Finally, only three tickets were issued to drivers parking without clearly displaying a pay-and-display ticket or voucher, and for re-parking in the same parking place within an hour after leaving.

Between April 1, 2023, and April 30, 2024, a total of 244 Penalty Charge Notices were successfully appealed.

Sutton Council was approached for a comment.
