By Mr A.E. Clark, Morden
I have been following, with interest, the twists and turns around the Morden Tavern issue.
I am not at all surprised by the planning inspector's decision to allow the developers to go ahead with flats on this site.
What did surprise me were the utterly naive tactics of the St Helier Pub Group.
In tough economic times, it was surely not wise to seek money from residents to run a pub that had run itself into the ground.
The inspector was not impressed at all with this approach.
The Group would have been better advised to concentrate on influencing what would take the place of the pub.
As it is, the development will now go ahead with the original image of the developers - but this time - with retail stores included.
This will be bad news for the other local independent shops nearby.
Whoever was the leading light behind this shambles of a campaign should go back to the tap room and mug up on the A to Z of effective lobbying.
