The Civil Rights Movement only gained prominence once the media started to cover some of the stories, and this helped them form their opinion on King, and decide whether they supported the movement or where against it. Therefore to help evaluate Martin Luther King’s role in the Civil Rights Movement  we must consider the different types of public opinions that were held by other people, to help contribute to a true judgement of if his role was exaggerated or not. Martin Luther King was born on the 15th January 1929, to Reverend Martin Luther King Senior, and school teacher Alberta Williams King. Seeing as his father was the reverend of the local church King was involved in many church affairs, and was a prominent member of the choir. He left Morehouse College in 1948 with a degree in Sociology and later in 1951 graduated from a college in Pennsylvania after obtaining a bachelor of divinity degree. He later met Coretta Scott, whom he married in 1953. He later moved with his young family to Alabama to become the reverend of the Dexter Avenue Baptist Church, only when he was 25year old. Some people thought because King had come from an elite Black background he did not understand the extent of the racism they faced, and this is shown by SOURCE. Also King did not appeal to the Blacks in the north who lived in ghettos, and slums, because he was mainly preaching for the south and had come from an elite background.
