Harlequins director of rugby Conor O’Shea insisted the loss of winger Ugo Monye would not derail his side’s Premiership title ambitions.

The 27-year-old British & Irish Lion suffered a hamstring injury in last week’s 43-33 defeat to Leicester Tigers and was a major doubt for the play-off semi-final.

Fit-again Tom Williams was likely to be recalled for next week’s final day trip to Sale Sharks, while Sam Smith has also been in fine form for Quins this term.

O’Shea confirmed Monye was not certain to be ready for the Premiership final – should Quins get there – but had every confidence his back up staff could do the job required.

“Ugo has damaged his hamstring and is definitely out for the Sale game,” he said.

“It is too early to say how long he will be out, but it is not an insignificant injury.

“It is a blow to lose his experience, but he has missed parts of this season and we can more than cope in his absence.

“Tom Williams is fit again and Sam Smith has played well all season. The likes of Seb Stegmann have been flying recently.

“So, I’m sure we’ll have plenty of cover.”

Meanwhile, Quins pair Mike Brown and Chris Robshaw have been shortlisted for the Premiership player of the year award.

“Chris and Mike know their success is down to the team’s efforts and I know they would trade an individual award for a Premiership winners’ medal,” added O’Shea.
