Richmond director of rugby Steve Hill has backed his men to secure the two wins they need to secure a National Division Two South play-off spot and possibly the title.

Hill’s men drew 16-16 at Henley Hawks to leave them needing table-toppers Old Albanians to slip up if they are to pip them to automatic promotion this season.

Two wins – at home to Lydney tomorrow and at Hartpury College next week – will secure second place and a promotion play-off with the runners-up in National Division Two North at the very least.

And Hill is in confident mood.

“We knew this was going to be a very difficult encounter and so it proved,” he saiid.

“I was immensely pleased with how our pack went in the tight and how we held our nerve and discipline at the end of the game.

“We certainly created the most chances and but for the final pass on a couple of occasions we would have secured the win.

“This type of game will stand us in good stead for the two remaining league matches, which ultimately will decide our season. I have every confidence in our players.”
