Rosslyn Park head coach Alex Codling admits he is salivating over the prospect of facing neighbours and fellow high-flyers Esher on Saturday.

Codling and his troops made the long trip to Tynedale at the weekend and returned victorious, running in six tries to win 41-13.

The win moved Park into second in National League One and ahead of Esher, who suffered defeat at league-leaders Doncaster Knights – who Park face in two weekends’ time.

However, Codling insisted he has no interest in their opponents’ previous failures and insists there is still plenty to improve on if they are to send Esher home empty-handed on Saturday.

He said: “It is always a very competitive game – it is a local derby.

“We had two very close games against Esher last year and I think it will be a humdinger on Saturday.

“They play a very wide, expansive game and they have a very good full-back.

“They have got threats all over the pitch but then we have as well.

“We probably still haven’t played to our best for 80 minutes – that is a big focus for us this week.”

He added: “When you are playing against teams like Doncaster and Esher, it is vital not to switch off at any point.”

Two tries inside the first half-hour for wing Joseph Ajuwa set the wheels in motion at Tynedale.

There were further scores from Henry Staff, Adam Bellamy, Dave Vincent and Alex Lundberg, plus 11 points off Scott Sneddon’s boot.

Codling admitted he could not have asked for much more than a bonus point win away, but he is focussed on extending their unbeaten home record on Saturday.

“It was a very satisfying afternoon and the most pleasing thing was the manner of the victory and the way we played,” he added.

“But we started a bit slowly – we had the wind in the first half – and we could always be more accurate.

“There are probably two or three games this season where we have scored two or three tries and not managed to get the fourth.

“But it is about making sure you get the win first and foremost. That’s the basis for any team to be successful.”
