Head coach Alex Codling insisted Rosslyn Park are not playing boring rugby, after a 6-6 draw at Henley Hawks maintained their unbeaten start to the National League One season.

Daniel Wells and Sam Katz each kicked two penalties for Henley and Park respectively as they shared the points.

Park have made a strong start to the season, especially in defence where they have conceded just 27 points from their first three league games.

Codling admitted things have not quite clicked at the other end of the pitch, but he insists it is only a matter of time until they are a well-rounded outfit.

“They probably look like boring affairs but today certainly wasn’t a bore draw,” he said. “It is just about execution, a bit of composure and perhaps a bit of luck.

“The boys are making errors but they are not doing it deliberately and we are still unbeaten, which is positive.

“I think it is probably a microcosm of the way out first three games have gone this season. We were outstanding in defence, as we have been every game.

“They are a very good attacking threat and we did incredibly well to keep them quiet. We are just dropping too many balls and wasting too many opportunities at the moment.

“We know it’s a work in progress but it is a reflection of how healthy we are as a team and how much we want to work for each other. For a number of reasons we are not converting our opportunities.”

The draw follows back-to-back wins against Cinderford and Richmond, and Park look well-placed to compete near the top of the league this season.

But Codling stressed the importance of being prepared for a wide range of challenges as the year goes on – starting with Blaydon next weekend.

“It is a positive start to the season,” he added. “We have brought in some players and it is always going to take some time for them to gel.

“We have just got to keep working on our decision-making and our accuracy and just be positive. The work ethic is there but we just have to convert pressure into points.

“We are going to come up against a physical threat on Saturday. Every team is different and we faced one already at Cinderford. We play teams with different skills and it is just about adapting.

“We have had to put a huge amount of effort in to get the results. We are just keeping teams in the game at the moment and that is a big thing on Saturday.”
