Welterweight Lee Cannon has been handed a surprise crack at Queensbury Boxing League title honours on Saturday.

The 26-year-old estate agent from Mitcham is to fight former champion Tom Knight on the undercard of the Striking Distance promotion at the Effingham Park Hotel in Crawley.

The bout was originally an eliminator but, with reigning champion Gary Doocey unexpectedly relinquishing the title, it has been elevated to full championship status – giving Cannon the biggest opportunity of his career.

But he will have to be on his guard against Knight, who held the title before losing to Doocey earlier this year.

“After a few poor performances I feel a completely different fighter coming into this contest,” said Cannon.

“And you are going to see the most focused and determined Lee Cannon there has ever been on the night.

“My training has been going really well in the build up to this one and I’ve not been hampered by the normal injuries that seem to have plagued me in my previous bouts in the league.

“I feel really hungry for this and although there are some people who think Knight is technically better than me, I feel I’m the better boxer in there.

“I’m not going to give too much away but we have a game plan for this one and if I can stick to it I know I have the beating of him.”
