Richmond won the 2009 Thames Water London Youth Games Regatta, beating off strong competition from second-placed Greenwich.

Richmond won the rowing and kayak sprint categories – two of the four disciplines at the regatta, which saw more than 500 young Londoners take part during the day.

These first placed finishes, together with their performances in the other two events – sailing and kayak slalom – won them enough points to be crowned regatta champions of London.

Team organiser Jennie Platt said: “Team Richmond performed to a very high standard on Saturday, which was reflected in our first place finish.

“We are really proud of all four of our teams who competed at the regatta.”

Hounslow were rewarded with a silver in the kayak sprint category.

Team manager Gurpal Sahota said: “We came to enjoy ourselves and try our hardest – we had a fun day and are delighted to have finished second.”

The team was drawn from a range of schools, including Brentford Girls’, St Paul’s CoE Primary and Gumley House Convent.

Olympic gold medallist Tim Brabants, who won a kayak sprint gold in Beijing, presented the medals.
