Streatham Redskins had a topsy-turvy two days last weekend as they were thrashed 14-0 on the Isle of Wight on Saturday but bounced back 24 hours later to record their first win of the season 3-2 over Bracknell Hornets.

The Redskins squad, already heavily short-staffed due to a number of injuries, were forced to take an extra-depleted squad south for their National Ice Hockey League South Division One game with Wightlink Raiders with work commitments preventing another nine from travelling.

Many of those returned on Sunday though and Tomas Valko was back from injury as the Redskins came back from a losing position twice at Streatham Ice Arena to win with two goals in the last three minutes from Warren Rost and Irish international Stevie Balmer.

“We went to the Isle of Wight with a depleted squad - hence the disastrous scoreline.” said head coach Barry Spours.

“But we were not good enough and there was a little bit of resignation from the other players as they did not see the big players in the locker room.

“The Isle of Wight is a hard place to go to anyway as you are playing in a tiny rink, but to go there with a depleted squad is a recipe for disaster.

“We had our key players back for Sunday’s game including Tomas Valko though and it just came together.

"It was a big turn around and a crucial win for us.”
