Teddington Cricket Club’s Dawid Malan hopes returning Middlesex to the top-flight will help press his claims for an England call-up.

The Roehampton-born 22-year-old, the club’s leading first-class run scorer for the last two seasons, panned a new four-year deal with the Panthers this week keeping him at Lord’s until 2014.

Middlesex finished second from bottom in LV= County Championship Division Two last summer and Malan - a regular at Teddington before establishing himself as a county cricketer - is out to revive their fortunes.

“I’ve enjoyed the time I’ve spent at the club and feel my cricket is moving in the right direction,” he said.

“My aim is to play in a successful side and I hope to help take Middlesex back to where they were when they were dominating county cricket.

“I also want to play for England and hope that by playing a leading role in the club’s success I will be able to achieve that goal.”

And Middlesex managing director of cricket, Angus Fraser, reckons Malan - whose brother Charl still plays for Teddington - has the potential to be a club great.

“Dawid is a young man with a huge amount of potential. He works incredibly hard and has the ability to go on to achieve great things in the game,” he added.

“For the past two seasons he has been the club’s most consistent batsman and wins games of cricket, as he showed last year against Sussex at Hove, Surrey at Lord’s and Glamorgan in Cardiff.

“When in top form he is a delight to watch. In the past two seasons he has made steady progress and I expect his batting to develop further over the coming years as he works things out.

“Dawid has the talent to become one of Middlesex’s finest modern day batsmen.”
