Cheam Bowling Club enjoyed some outstanding results over the Bank Holiday week.

Having, in recent weeks, defeated Shirley Park and Purley Bury in the National Top Club competition, the club’s B team had an outstanding victory over a strong Croydon entry, winning both two and four-wood singles and the triples to reach the last eight teams in Surrey.

They now meet Purley Bury who put out Cheam’s A team in the previous round.

Meantime both National Double Rinks progressed impressively to the Fourth Round beating Chipstead and Croydon respectively.

The B team’s result against Croydon was especially spectacular, Croydon conceding after 18 ends.

The second annual Appleford Cup, against Sutton and District saw Cheam retain the trophy which had been presented by the Appleford family in memory of Jackie and Derek Appleford, both District stalwarts and members at Cheam who died last year. A raffle, in aid of St Raphael’s Hospice, raised £90. In a keenly contested match, Cheam won on four rinks, losing on two and drawing one with Mike Appleford (photo) skipping Cheam’s highest winning rink..
