A trainee golf professional from Shepperton has won a shot at national glory after winning a place in the final of the Crown Golf English PGA Assistants’ Championship 2009.
John Harries, assistant professional at Sunbury Golf Centre, won a regional qualifying event held at Pyrford Golf Club in July. As a result, he qualified for the final of the prestigious annual tournament, which is open to all assistant golf professionals in England. The 30-man final takes place at Hampton Court Palace Golf Club September 28.
Harries played an impressive round to finish one stroke ahead of five runners-up with a score of 70 – two under par.
“I’ve worked hard for my shot at the national title, and I am really looking forward to the final,” said Harries.
“If I win it, it will be the high point of my career so far.
“The experience of playing in such a competitive tournament has been a real confidence builder already, so I have my fingers crossed for finals day.”
Sunbury Golf Centre general manager Brad Clarke added: “John has practised continuously since he joined us, and has gained a huge amount of confidence in his ability. He is also a top class young golf professional. We are very proud of him, and we are backing him to win the Crown Golf English PGA Assistants Championship.”
