Weybridge travelled to Sutton on Saturday with the hope that their luck would change.

Once again, Weybridge won the toss and elected to bat, opening the innings with Franklin and Zaf Ansari.

The new opening partnership started steadily but, in the fifteenth over, Franklin (24) became the first of Poynter’s victims when caught behind off the bowling of Pope.

Ansari (11) was the first of Stanier’s victims in the next over and the first of four to be adjudged out leg before.

This brought his brother, Aki, fresh from making a century for Cambridge in the University game to the wicket.

On this occasion he made 45 before being Poynter’s fourth victim when caught behind off Stanier.

Three more wickets quickly fell and with the score on 117 for 8 things looked far from healthy for the visitors. Bennett was joined by Turner and their partnership of 31 was invaluable. Turner was then Poynter’s fifth victim when he was stumped off the bowling of Todd.

Livett joined Bennett and put on a rapid 34 in their partnership of 47 before Bennett (30) became the fourth to be adjudged out leg before with the score on 195.

Stanier finished with 4 for 38 and Todd with 3 for 46, while Poynter took three catches and stumped two.

Turner took the wicket of Kuiper in his second over but shortly after, the rain arrived causing a stoppage of just over the hour during which tea was taken.

The ever present threat of rain once play recommenced prompted Spencer and London to take the initiative whilst the bowlers had to cope with a progressively wet ball and the fielders with poor light.

Their partnership added 121to the total before Spencer (68) was caught and bowled by Mann. Two more wickets fell shortly after but London concentrated well to finish on 81 not out ably supported by his captain as they won by 6 wickets with four overs to spare.

The rapidly failing light had been offered to the batsmen but with victory in sight Sunbury had been determined to stay at the crease.

Weybridge are at home to local rivals Cobham Avorians on Saturday.
