The Beavers secured their first point of the new Ryman Premier season with a battling display at the Dripping Pan against Lewes on Tuesday night.

However, it could have been all three after Charlie Moone opened the scoring in the first half.

The Beavers nearly took the lead in the first minute as Joe Turner was played into space on the left hand side.

His cross into the centre was gathered by Moone, who shot first time, but the Beavers' old friend, goalkeeper Rikki Banks, blocked the attempt at the near post.

Despite this start, Lewes started to gain the upper hand and on 11 minutes, striker Ade Olorunda latched onto a Wheeler cross, but his header was was wide.

However, the Beavers took the lead in the 18th minute, with a simple, direct goal.

A long ball forward was flicked on expertly by Joel Ledgister, right through the middle for Moone, who though under pressure, kept his head and slid the ball under Banks.

This stunned the hosts for a short while, but five minutes later, Olorunda again met a cross from Wheeler and this time it took a deflection, sending it wide.

Just before the half hour, it looked as if the Beavers might get lucky as a Turner shot from the edge of the penalty area took a looping deflection off a defender, forcing Banks to retreat hurriedly.

He just managed to get back in time to tip the bar over the bar.

Olorunda was proving to be a nuisance, being fed on a regular basis by Wheeler, but his third header of the night was as accurate as the other, drifting wide while virtually unmarked.

Just before the interval, Anson Cousins appeared to slip very awkwardly on the wet turf, and appeared to tweak his ankle, sufficiently serious for him to be withdrawn and replaced by Darren Powell, whose appearance switched George Wells to left back.

After the interval, Lewes took advantage of Wheeler's industry down the left, his cross was met just inside the box by Logan.

His first time shot gave Rodney Chiweshe no chance, although from the press box, it looked as if a slight deflection might have had a hand.

Unlike Saturday, the Beavers stood up and made sure Lewes had to work for any chances they got.

Turner was the next to make his presence felt - he gathered up a wayward ball in the Lewes' box and shot from eight yards, unfortunately for him Banks stood tall and the shot rebounded off him to the edge of the box, where Joel Ledgister's shot was blocked and ultimately cleared.

The game threatened to degenerate into a battle for midfield squatting rights, but Lewes never gave up and on 82 minutes fancied their chances of a winner after Mo Harkin conceded a free kick some 25 yards out following a dangerous high foot.

Substitute Treleaven obviously fancied his luck and quite neatly curled the shot round the wall.

With Chiweshe helpless at the other side of his goal, the ball thudded against the post and flew away for the throw.

The game then drifted away, and the Beavers will be quite relieved to pick up a point, given the meagre resources available to the management duo.

Saturday sees Hampton & Richmond take a journey to Bury St Edmunds to take on Bury Town, in what could prove to be a stern test.
