Crisis club Hounslow Borough had an Hellenic League suspension lifted on Wednesday after former chairman Stefan Poulos returned to assure the league he could raise £7,500 to pay the club's fines, debts and financial obligations for the rest of the season.

A war of words erupted between Poulos and vice-chairman John Davis, who is understood to have quit before the club held an emergency committee meeting to reinstate Poulos as chairman.

The club, suspended by the league last Friday, was given until Wednesday to prove they could fulfil their fixtures and pay their way until the end of the season.

They were fined a total of £790 for failing to pay match officials in their home clash with Slimbridge two weeks ago and causing a midweek fixture against Witney United to be postponed because they again could not guarantee to pay the referee and linesmen.

Poulos said: "The league agreed to lift the suspension when I told them I could raise £7,500 in a bank loan to enable us to pay our way for the rest of the season. They have given us until March 8 to pay our fines and debts."

Davis refuses to take responsibility for the situation, pointing the finger at Poulos and manager Dennis Bainborough, who was also acting secretary.

He said: "My original agreement with Stefan was I would bring in a new chairman, and we would give Stefan £15,000 as well as pay £6,000 to temporary landlords Ruislip Manor to take over the lease at the Conquest Club, which was undergoing alterations.

"I also agreed to pay £450 a week to the club from the bar takings. But that deal fell through, mainly because Stefan did not want to hand over the reigns."

Davis, 41, who came in as bar manager in November, scoffed at allegations he failed to turn up at Bedfont to pay the landlords and the match officials.

He said: "I did not say I would go - I had the bar to look after. And it was not my responsibility to pay Bedfont or the match officials.

"I was paying the players' wages but refused to do so any longer following the 6-1 defeat at Wallingford when we started with seven men due to late arrivals.

"I was fed up with the lack of discipline, training and commitment and the fact that Dennis had gone to New Zealand for three weeks.

The league called off Borough's match at Almondsbury last weekend but Bainborough said his players would be available for Saturday's visit of Hungerford Town.
