World cup winner Danny Grewcock believes Chris Robshaw has done more than enough to establish himself as the England skipper for the Six Nations – and beyond.

Despite a media clamour for the Harlequins back-rower to take the role following Lewis Moody’s post World Cup retirement, Robshaw’s appointment still raised more than a few eyebrows.

But two-time British and Irish Lion Grewcock reckons Robshaw has more than justified his position, helping the Red Rose see off the challenge of both Italy and Scotland in their opening fixtures.

A home defeat against Wales somewhat blotted his – and England’s – copybook, but his side roared back to form in Paris on Sunday with a memorable 24-22 triumph over France.

“I think Chris has done a fine job as captain and thoroughly deserves the role,” he said.

“The pressure on his shoulders would have been enormous, not just because he was captain but because he was relatively inexperienced when it came to international rugby.

“But you would never have guessed that he had these things going against him when you look at the start he has made.

“Just looking at these early games it looks as though the discipline of the team has improved.

“Coaches can drill this into you until they are blue in the face but it is the captain’s role to enforce this on the pitch.

“Even though Chris is a new face he has talked up when he has needed to and been strong when needed too and he deserves a lot of credit.”
