Midfielder Elliott Godfrey has blasted suggestions that AFC Wimbledon are suffering a title wobble by insisting the Dons remain in the driving seat in the Blue Square South promotion race.

Wimbledon slipped to a controversial 2-1 defeat at third-placed Eastleigh last weekend, a result which saw their lead over Hampton & Richmond cut to a mere three points.

But, despite the Eastleigh setback coming on the heels of a rare home defeat to Welling the week before, Godfrey is refusing to get carried away.

He said: “I suppose you could look at it and say that we are letting other teams in.

“But as far as we are concerned it is simply refocusing our minds.

“Everyone was disappointed after Eastleigh, but we know that if we win our remaining games the league is ours.

“We are on the verge of creating history.

“The mood is good and the team spirit is still high.

“It just comes down to the players that pull on the Wimbledon shirt producing performances, because if we play to our potential we know no one can touch us.”

Refereeing decisions garnered all the headlines on the South Coast, with Eastleigh’s first goal appearing to have been punched into the net by Tom Jordan.

Eastleigh then added a second, before Godfrey grabbed a late consolation.

Worse still, Alan Inns was then dismissed after the final whistle for arguing with the officials.

Godfrey added: “It was always going to be a tough game, but the decisions really did not help.

“I always thought that the first goal would be vital, and theirs was a joke.

“I was sat on the bench, and it was so blatant we just assumed it wouldn’t be given.

“When they started to run off celebrating we couldn’t believe it.

“As for Alan’s sending off - that was crazy.

“I was walking off with him and he spoke to the ref - there were no swear words or anything like that.

“When the ref went to his pocket I thought he was going to book him - not show a red card.

“It was absolutely ridiculous, but we cannot do anything about that now.”

Attentions now turn to Saturday’s crucial home clash with mid-table Team Bath.

And Godfrey has a simple target over the remainder of the campaign.

He added: “I have been really disappointed with the number of goals I have scored this season.

“For the last three years I have scored regularly, but it just hasn’t happened this year.

“That has been massively frustrating, but I will be going all out to correct that over the next couple of weeks.”
