Matthew Tarrant revealed rowing with an Olympic champion has been a great learning experience.

The 23-year-old, who took up the sport as a youngster at Weybridge Rowing Club, teamed up with London 2012 men’s four gold medallist Alex Gregory to win the men’s pairs race at Team GB rowing’s second winter assessment in Lincolnshire on Saturday.

The pair clocked 18 minutes 2.46 seconds to finish three seconds ahead of second placed Moe Sbihi – of Molesey Boat Club – and Scott Durant, and third placed Constantine Louloudis and Twickenham’s Karl Hudspith.

Oxford Brookes University Boat Club’s Tarrant, who won men’s pairs gold at the U23 world championships in 2012, said: “It’s been really good to row with someone like Alex. I have really enjoyed it.

“I have learnt such a lot – not just in the boat, but mannerisms outside of it, too.”

Sbihi was one of five Molesey Boat Club athletes to feature in the top 10, including Andrew Triggs Hodge and James Foad.
