A glorious free-kick from Sam Saunders ensured Brentford extended their unbeaten run to 11 games in the spring sunshine as they drew 1-1 with Yeovil Town at Griffin Park on Saturday, writes Simon Webster.

With the Bees being safe in mid-table they are still aiming to ensure no side does the double over them this season, and this come from behind effort to take a draw ensures that aim lives on.

A point certainly satisfied Bees’ boss Andy Scott: “The application and attitude was fantastic on what was a hot day and with the games we have played recently, to get a point was a good result.”

Scott was forced into four changes to the side that beat Tranmere in midweek, with Sam Saunders and Gareth Ainsworth coming in on the wings, David Hunt in midfield and Ben Strevens returning up front.

Neither side had really got into their stride when Yeovil took the lead after only three minutes. Charlie MacDonald was adjudged to have pushed Jean-Paul Kalala just inside the box and Kalala sent Wojciech Szczesny the wrong way as he slotted the penalty into the right hand corner of the net.

Relegation-threatened Yeovil looked understandably nervous as they defended their precious lead and rarely threatened the Bees goal.

Midway through the half Sam Wood did well down the left for Brentford, before playing in MacDonald and his cross to the near post was cleared by Alex McCarthy in Yeovil’s goal.

As half time approached Saunders was tripped right on the edge of the penalty box and Hunt’s low free kick under the wall was saved by McCarthy.

Early in the second half Hunt had an opportunity with a free kick on the left hand side of the box, but his fierce shot was cleared by McCarthy again.

Yeovil had a rare chance at the other end when they won a throw on the left and it was headed over the bar by Steven Caulker.

Brentford drew level with a quarter of an hour remaining when MacDonald was fouled on the edge of the ‘D’ and Saunders hit a wonderful free kick round the right hand side of the wall and past McCarthy into the goal.

Five minutes later Saunders broke down the right and crossed for Strevens to send a glancing header wide of the right hand post.

Yeovil looked more dangerous in the closing stages as first Gavin Tomlin did well to cross from the right, but Szczesny punched clear, while in stoppage time Szczesny produced an excellent save to deny Tomlin from a Caulker cross as the Bees made it only four defeats in their last 45 league games at Griffin Park.
