Brentford’s sporting director Mark Warburton has paid tribute to Charlie MacDonald after the striker joined League One rivals MK Dons this afternoon for an undisclosed fee.

After joining the Bees from Southend United in 2008, fans' favourite MacDonald enjoyed a successful three seasons at Griffin Park in which he scored 45 goals in 127 matches in all competitions.

However, he found first-team action hard to come by this season under new manager Uwe Rosler, with the new addition of Clayton Donaldson reducing the 30-year-old’s chances of playing regular football.

“Charlie has been a loyal servant to the club over the past three seasons," said Warburton.

"Given that his first team appearances have been somewhat restricted this season it was felt in the best interests of both the player and the club that this opportunity offered the best way forward for all concerned.

"Charlie goes with out sincere thanks for his past services and every good wish for the future.

MacDonald’s departure has been tempered by the signing of former Leeds United striker Mike Grella , with the addition of former Leeds attacker Mike Grella after his contract at Elland Road was terminated by mutual consent.

"We are delighted to have Mike on board," added Warburton.

"He is a proven goalscorer and we are all looking forward to seeing him perform in a Brentford shirt."
