Woking 0-4 AFC Wimbledon

The Dons impressive pre-season continues as last season’s top scorer Danny Kedwell came back to scoring life – as his manager warned the Conference he will be the league’s best next term.

The striker scored 23 goals last season but before this afternoon’s trip to Kingsfield was still waiting to hit the net in the warm-up games.

But he was in deadly form at Woking. The Blue Square Bet South side simply had no answer as Wimbledon lifted the inaugural Phil Ledger Memorial Cup with ease.

Kedwell opened the scoring in the fourth minute and from that moment on didn’t look back to secure a thumping win.

“Danny is a quality act,” delighted manager Terry Brown said.

“Full-time training will give him another five or ten per cent and that will make him probably the best striker in our league. It is going to be a massive season but he is certainly looking the part right now. He took his goals superbly.”

The game was over before half-time with Kedwell netting a hat-trick.

He put the gloss on the day with a firm header in the second half as the Cards crumbled in front of over 1,000 fans.

But there was bad news for the travelling fans with midfielder Ricky Wellard a cause for concern.

“There is a tinge of disappointment because we are really picking up injuries at the minute,” added Brown.

“Ricky Wellard looks like he has injured his groin today. Yesterday Steven Gregory got injured and they are two of my best players. We don’t want to be doing without them.

“Pre-season is all about not injuring players and we’ve got four, if not five, out of a squad of 16 outfield players injured. So I’m very disappointed with the injury situation at the minute. Hopefully it doesn’t get worse than this as we’ve hardly been lucky, have we?”

Woking manager Graham Baker had a pop at his players with Wimbledon creating enough chances to hit double figures.

Baker said: “It was one team that is ready for the start of the season, team pattern wise, and one team that’s not ready.

“I’ve probably gone a bit easy with my players but we now need to get up to speed and quickly.”
