AFC Wimbledon collected their third victory inside seven days to complete a dream week that could well have saved their season.
It looked ten days ago like a midtable finish at best for the Blue Square Premier newcomers after fading dramatically out of form.
However, wins over Ebbsfleet at Kidderminster – and two second-half Jon Main goals at Salisbury tonight – has Wimbledon closing in on the top five.
They went sixth with this one-sided victory and manager Terry Brown is already describing Saturday’s match at home to Gateshead as “potentially huge”.
But the Kingsmeadow boss had a dig at his players – this despite securing a phenomenal seventh away league win well before Christmas.
He said: “People will call me this, that and the other but I’m not happy with a number of things out there this evening.
“I felt we should have delivered the ball better. It still isn’t good enough that final ball. I know I seem picky but we’ve got to do a bit better in certain areas. I know I sound moany but there you are.
“As soon as we got the first I thought we should have gone on to get three or four.
“I was disappointed with the first-half performance. We didn’t test their keeper but we had words at the break and we dominated the game from there on in.
“A week is a long time in football, isn’t it? We looked down and out the Saturday before last after we lost to York and I’m delighted with the turn around in form.
“If we can beat Gateshead at the weekend we have an opportunity to put ourselves back in the promotion race.”
The first half was cagey with both teams looking tired from their weekend exertions.
Wimbledon’s best chance fell to Lewis Taylor but his shot didn’t have enough bend to threaten James Bittner in the Whites’ goal.
The second half was a different story as Wimbledon laid siege to the Salisbury penalty box. Soon, Wellard almost capitalised on Danny Kedwell’s knock down but the opener wasn’t long in coming.
Taylor’s excellent cross into the danger-zone was too inviting for the unmarked Main to miss and he headed into the far corner.
The points were confirmed just seven minutes later. Will Hendry rode powerfully through the awful City midfield and poked the ball through to Main who was composed enough to collect his seventh goal in his last eight matches.
Brown added: “Mainy took both very well and he’ll be delighted to be back in goalscoring form after a sticky start to the season.”
