Wimbledon weightlifter Jo Calvino is enduring mixed emotions after finishing fifth at the Commonwealth Games.

The 33-year-old, competing in the 48kg weight category, finished 23kg behind gold medallist Sanjita Khumukcham of India, and 12kg behind Nigeria’s Nkechi Opara in bronze.

Calvino lifted 66kg in the snatch and 84kg in the clean and jerk, and it is the latter that is causing the British champion consternation.

“My snatching was good but my clean and jerk was a little bit disappointing and that’s usually my stronger lift so that hurts a bit more.

“I think that little cut in body weight played a part, and possibly nerves. When you have had to cut weight, sometimes it hits you a little bit harder on the clean and jerk.

"They are some of the reasons. I don’t think tactically it was a bad game, it just didn’t come together on the day."

She added: "But overall not too bad, so it is mixed emotions. I think I equalled two of my British records so under the environment I can’t argue.”

"I think it was a really good group and everyone pushed each other and it made it a really good competition.

"I was nervous but nerves in a good way, I was ready for it and it was nice to have a lot of support, that always helps."

While Calvino’s Games is over, she will not be leaving Glasgow just yet, nor would she rule out coming back in four years’ time in Australia.

She said: "I’m not ruling out Brisbane because my best friend is from there. I’d love to be there in some capacity, although I’ll have to talk with people.

"I’m staying here until the end of the Games, I’ve got to party.

“We have a couple of juniors in our squad so I will be supporting our team management to get them ready and make sure their nerves are managed, and make sure they have a good day.”
