They may be team-mates from the Weir Archer Academy, but Roehampton’s Moatez Jomni and Jabari Knight gave no quarter at the British Wheelchair Racing Association’s national championships.

The pair from the Kingston-based team went head to head in the 100m, 200m and 400m at Stoke Mandeville, with Knight claiming two silvers and a gold, and Jomni claimed a bronze and gold.

It would have been sweeter for Jomni, but a victory in the 400m was wiped out following disqualification for a lane infringement, handing the crown to Knight.

Club captain Anthony Gotts said: “Mo and Jabari are best of mates but when they get on the start line neither of them wants to come off second best.

“The 200m that Mo won was one of the best races I have ever seen.

“Mo will have to keep training hard because Jabari will be going all out to regain the upper hand next time.”

In the 100m, Jomni, ranked inside the world top 10, got off to a lightning fast start but was caught and passed by Swiss international Beat Bosch, who won in 18.01 seconds.

Jomni and Knight fought it out over the remaining podium places, with the taller Knights (18.24secs) pipping Jomni (18.41).

The friends were dominant in the 200m, as they pulled away from the field almost immediately to battle it out to the line.

Jomni inched ahead in the final few metres to win in 32.17secs, forcing Jabari into second (32.28secs).

The next step for Jomni is to pull on a GB shirt, but he needs sponsorship – if you can help, or if you want to get involved in the academy team, contact Gotts at Ant400mh@hotmail.co.uk.
