Harry Pell will have one thing on his mind when the new League Two season starts this afternoon– scoring more goals for AFC Wimbledon.

The 21-year-old has also promised the Dons fans they will see a different style of football this term, compared to the nailbiting shenanigans of last time around.

And, with new team-mates, a new football philosophy and a manager he trusts, Pell could not hide his excitement ahead of the curtain raiser at Torquay United.

Pell only found the net twice in 17 games last season, but he already has two goals in pre-season this time around, and the midfielder wants more.

“Last season we played a more direct style of football because we needed the points to survive in the league,” Pell said.

“But this season, the boss has brought in a new philosophy of play. He wants us to spend more time on the ball and be more confident with it.

“That suits me perfectly because I love having the ball at my feet, and I want to get forward more and score more goals – that is my ultimate aim.

“We all thought we should not have been in the position we were in last year, not with the squad we had.

“So this year, with the new faces and new style, we want to push on up the table. It is going to be exciting.”

While pre-season has been tough, Pell revealed that it has not been as tough as it could have been and that it is all part of Neal Ardley’s planned assault on League Two.

Ardley promised his players they would get the right amount of game time, and with just one defeat in six pre-season games it would seem he has got the mix right.

Pell said: “The gaffer does not want us to maintain a certain level of fitness all season and then drop away at the end because of tiredness.

“Instead, everything in training has been geared to starting the season right and getting better as it goes on so we’re strong at the end.

“We’ve not been killed in any training sessions, but it has been consistent.

“At the start of pre-season, the boss told us to trust him and that we would get the right game time to get the best out of us.

“We do trust him, and we’re ready for the challenges ahead. Hopefully the fans will be too.”
