DARTFORD running sensation Adam Gemili has confirmed he will compete for a place in Great Britain’s Olympic running team.

The 18-year-old stunned British athletics earlier this month when he ran 100m in 10.08 seconds, making him the country's fastest man this year.

Despite his record time lying comfortably within the Olympic qualifying standard, Adam faced the dilemma of whether to continue training for the World Junior Championships or take a shot at winning Team GB place.

This week he decided to take part in trials for the tightly-contested men’s 100m event, held in Birmingham on June 22 and 23.

The former Dartford Grammar School pupil said: “I’m very excited to get the opportunity to compete in the Olympic trials, especially when it is for the home games.

“But for me there’s no pressure at all.

“I had no intention to even do these trials at the start of the year so the fact I’m doing them now is just a big bonus.

“I want to go and have fun and get some good experience racing against the top sprinters from Great Britain - I just want to go out there and run to show everyone what I can do.”

Adam, who is the second fastest European this year, is undaunted but excited at the prospect of going head-to-head with some of the athletes he looked up to in his youth.

He added: “Growing up watching these sprinters on television was inspiring and the fact I now have the chance to line up and race against them will feel amazing."

Adam opted out of the 100m trials for the World Junior Championships on Sunday (June 17) but sliced 0.09 seconds off his personal best to win the 200m heat.

In doing so, he became the third fastest British junior runner ever, with only Christian Malcolm and Ade Mafe running quicker.

Adam, a member of Blackheath and Bromley Harriers Athletics Club, will compete against athletes including Dwain Chambers for the three places available in Team GB.
