Merton Council has released a statement following the Grenfell Tower fire a North Kensington.

Council leader Cllr Stephen Alambritis said: “Our thoughts and condolences are with those who have lost family and friends in the Grenfell Tower fire and to those who have been made homeless by this tragedy.

“If you would like to support those affected by the Grenfell fire, please donate via local organisation the Kensington and Chelsea Foundation who are collecting contributions on behalf of the community.

“We are seeking reassurances from the housing association Clarion Housing Group and other housing associations which own and manage homes in Merton, that their fire safety measures are robust and comprehensive to ensure the safety of residents.”

The fire engulfed the 24-storey tower block in the early hours of Wednesday. The death toll is currently 17, but this is expected to rise substantially.
