An 11-year-old girl has died after she was hit by a bus in Tooting.

Olivia Daisy McKie, from the Brixton area, was hit by the bus on Southcroft Road as it was travelling east towards Mitcham Lane.

Police were called shortly before 1pm on Friday afternoon to reports of a collison with a young girl.

The ambulance service and fire brigade also attended.

Olivia was taken by ambulance to St Georges Hospital, Tooting, but was pronounced dead soon afterwards.

A postmortem examination will be held at St George's mortuary on a date to be confirmed. An inquest will open and adjourn in due course.

The driver of the bus, which was travelling on route 333, was given a routine breath test - but police will not reveal the result.

He was taken to a South London hospital with severe shock but discharged later that day.

A number of roads were closed as a result of the accident including Mitcham Lane, Southcroft Road and Crowborough Road.

One bystander said: "I got to the site around 3.40pm. There were police cordons all the way from Amen Corner up to near the Crowborough Road bus stop.

"The bus was at the bus stop, lights off, engine off and stationary. The front of the bus had a small crack on the front windscreen."

Earlier reports had given Olivia's age as 12 but this has been corrected by police. Police are now appealing for witnesses to the incident as the area was very busy with pedestrians and other buses.

Anyone with any information is asked to call the Collision Investigation Unit at Hampton on 0208 941 9011 or Crimestoppers on 0800 555 111 if they wish to remain anonymous.
