A friend’s battle against ovarian cancer inspired a fundraising family to raise thousands for a cancer charity at their annual fair.
The McAvoy family have been fundraising at their home in Gravel Hill since 2008 after they visited an AIDS orphanage in Kenya.
What started off as a small coffee morning has developed into a craft fair for visitors held in a marquee in their garden.
And this year they asked their friend Sadie Rance to nominate the charity to support and she chose Clic Sargent, as she has received support and care from them in her fight against cancer.
John McAvoy said: “She was 21 when was diagnosed and she had a tumour the size of a melon.
“Despite chemotherapy and surgery this terrible disease still has a hold on her.
“She has remained strong, positive and is a wonderful person and inspiration to us all.
"Sadie also got married recently to her long term boyfriend Jason and is determined to make the most of her life despite her illness.”
More than 300 people turned up to enjoy the fair, which also included a barbecue, face painting, vintage clothing and jewellery.
The final amount raised is expected to exceed £3,000.
