More trains will be stopping at Hackbridge station later this year after hundreds of Sutton campaigners urged transport chiefs to revise a new proposed timetable.

Govia Thameslink Railway (GTR) has announced there will be more routes coming through the area this coming May following the changes.

In last June’s version, there was going to be a reduction at peak times from Hackbridge to London Victoria but now there will be four Southern trains per hour during the week as well as two Thameslink trains.

Carshalton and Wallington MP Tom Brake said: “I am delighted that Govia Thameslink Railway has listened to the hundreds of local residents, local councillors and me.

“We have been campaigning since last summer to get GTR to change their minds.

“There are important housing developments in the area and I know that these changes will benefit thousands of commuters.

“The new timetable cannot come soon enough for residents who have had to put up with overcrowded, unreliable and shambolic services for far too long.”

The petition, ‘Save Our Hackbridge Trains’, launched by the Hackbridge Rail User Group received a total of 625 signatures when it began in July 2017.

Now a new timetable is set to be released on May 20 following a two-year public consultation.

Councillor Hanna Zuchowska, Wandle Valley representative, said: “The increase in services through Hackbridge is brilliant news for the local community.

“I would like to congratulate the residents who set up the ‘Save our Hackbridge Trains’, all the residents who signed the petition as well as Tom Brake who helped us massively by delivering leaflets at stations, raising awareness on his social media platforms and by raising our concerns directly with Govia at a meeting in Parliament.”
