The family of murdered Meredith Kercher said the student has been forgotten in the media circus surrounding her killer's appeal.

Arline Kercher told Italian TV programme Porta a Porta that Meredith, from Coulsdon, was “betrayed” when she was found with the her throat cut in her flat in Perugia in November 2007.

Amanda Knox, her flatmate, and Knox’s former boyfriend Raffaele Sollecito were convicted of the murder of the 21-year-old but are currently appealing that decision.

The appeal trial is coming to a close but Meredith’s sister Stephanie, 21, said the drama surrounding the case had meant Meredith had been “completely forgotten”.

She said: “There aren’t photos of her in the media.

“The focus has completely moved away from Meredith to Amanda and Raffaele.

"In these four years, Meredith has been completely forgotten. But we need to find justice for her, we need to find the truth for her."

"I'm scared of forgetting what she looked like," she said. "I'm scared of forgetting how she was to cuddle or what her hands were like, or anything really."

There is growing confidence in the camp of Knox, 24, and Sollecito, 27, that their appeal will be successful.

But Arline remains convinced of their guilt.

She said: “There was a lot of evidence at that trial. What’s changed?

“All that matters for me is that my daughter was killed by someone who was declared guilty and sentenced at the first trial.

“Today I ask myself what’s happened to that evidence.

“I’m told it appears to be no longer valid, but these are two items of evidence; what about the rest?

“My daughter was killed while she was in the safest place, in her bedroom.

“Whoever killed her knew her well and had her trust, but she was betrayed.”

Prosecutors in the appeal case have demanded life sentences for Knox and Sollecito if their appeal is unsuccessful.

Knox was sentenced to 26 years and Sollecito was sentenced to 25 years for sexually abusing and murdering Meredith.

A third man, Rudy Guede from the Ivory Coast, is already serving 16 years for his part in the murder.
