An ambitious Raynes Park rower has refused to admit defeat after setting himself a gargantuan charity fundraising target for Pakistan flood victims.
Office worker Azam Rehman, 27, set himself a target of collecting £88k by clocking up 1,750km on his rowing machine over 20 days, with the help of AFC Wimbledon’s mascot, Haydon the Womble, last week.
With two days left, Mr Rehman said: “I’ve still got 400km to go, and I probably won’t be able to reach 1,750 in time.
“But I’ll carry on because 1,750 represents the people that died this year.”
Last month, Mr Rehman had planted himself on his rowing machine from Monday to Friday outside Wimbledon station, where he wowed commuters with his rowing prowess.
Then on the following Saturday he went to AFC Wimbledon’s stadium in Kingston, where club mascot Haydon the Womble chipped in with a 500m dash.
He added: “The support from people has been amazing. On Saturday, there was this one guy who had about six pints then got on the rower and smashed 1,000 metres in four minutes.
“By getting the community involved, I would want them not just donate, but to row part of the distance, so they are physically helping.”
