Merton turns 50 this year - and celebrations to mark the anniversary of the borough's creation kicked off last week with a cream cake and a school logo competition.

Councillors, former mayors, MPs, school children and Merton Music Foundation performers were among those to attend the invitation-only party in the Merton Civic Centre on Wednesday.

Wimbledon Times:

First prize for the primary school Golden Jubilee logo competition went to Stella Rodriquez, eight, from Singlegate School, for her 'Together' design featuring "all the things associated with Merton" including tennis rackets, Merton Abbey Mills and a tube station.

The London Borough of Merton was formed in 1965 with the merging of the Municipal Borough of Wimbledon and the Municipal Borough of Mitcham - both formerly in Surrey.

Fifty memorable moments in the borough's 50 years have been captured in a 13 minute video created by the council - including a performance by The Who at the Wimbledon Palais in 1966, a devastating fire in Woolworths in the Broadway in 1981, and the Queen's visit to St Mark's Academy in Mitcham in 2012.

With a budget of only about £2,000, the council is encouraging residents and businesses to join in the celebrations by organising their own events.

So far only five events have been registered - including a local history quiz afternoon, a bowls open day and a music and picnic in the park event.

But Councillor Nick Draper, cabinet member for community and culture, said he expects there to be 50 Jubilee celebration events around the borough over the coming year.

Merton is one of 20 outer London boroughs to have been formed 50 years ago this month - with each borough choosing to celebrate the anniversary differently.

Other boroughs appear to have been more ambitious - with Croydon, Havering, Kingston-upon-Thames, Redbridge, Richmond-upon-Thames, Waltham Forest and Wandsworth joining forces with a music promoter to create an ambitious touring arts programme bringing live music to high streets in 2015 and 2016.

Coun Draper said: "After the elections we can concentrate a bit harder on it. We are working on a very small budget and I know that other boroughs are putting more money into it but they have got more money."
