More than £5,000 was raised for good causes in Merton at a charity race night recognising positive initiatives in the borough.

Hosted by The Admiral Trust, the fundraising evening brought together close to 100 business people, residents and politicians for an evening of auctions, betting and fish and chips.

Winners of a competition offering £2,000 to good causes were announced on the night, with disability charity Merton Mencap winning first prize and a cheque.

Mental health charity STEM4 and Wimbledon Kickboxing and Boxing Club will also receive £2,000 each over the next year as a result of the unique competition for which the Wmbledon Guardian was the media partner.

Melinda Hutchinson, projects manager at Merton Mencap, said: "Funds will be applied immediately to support the running of their weekly Generation Club and its activities, which is vital to keeping the club going.

"The Generations Club began two years ago and provides regular social opportunities for young people with a learning disability and a much needed regular break for family carers. "Funding is always a challenge for a small charity - the support from Admiral Trust makes a big difference."

The top prize was awarded by honorary guest, ex-England cricketer Dave Smith and Adam Scott, of Sutton-based Amicus Insurance Solutions Ltd - the main sponsors of the event.

Terry Withers, chairman of The Admiral Trust, said: "The trustees were overwhelmed by the support and generosity of Merton residents, businesses and politicians who came together on the night to create an event to truly remember.

"The feedback we had on the night and since, assures us that we haven't simply provided a platform for those who care about Merton to gather together."

The fundraiser took place at Tooting and Mitcham Football Club in Bishopsford Road on Friday night.

The Admiral Trust is a charity founded in January 2012 by local businessmen and women to provide resources, encouragement and support to those in need.
