Passengers were stranded on a tube for more than an hour after fire broke out on rail tracks.
The District Line was suspended between Putney Bridge and Southfields shortly after 7.30pm last night.
A decision was made to stop the service following reports of smouldering on the track.
The first of two stalled trains was moved into Wimbledon to let passengers off, but the second was stalled for more than an hour.
Nigel Holness, LU operations director for the District Line, said: "LFB and Network Rail, which manages and maintains this part of the railway, engaged in discussion on turning off the track current to examine the area, while we ensured that the first of two stalled trains was moved into platform at Wimbledon to allow passengers to disembark."
The London Ambulance Service were also on hand as a precaution.
Sam Burne James, of Southfields, said there was confusion on the train as the drivers PA system did not work for 20 minutes.
He said: "It was very frustrating as we had not heard anything. I did manage to memorise the Evening Standard."
The fire follows a similar incident last month when a blaze on the track stalled trains in the same area.
