Two friends are busy preparing to set off on an extraordinary journey - cycling from London to Sydney in aid of charity.

Matt McDonald, 33, of Hosack Road in Balham, and Andy Madeley, 33, of Durnsford Road in Wimbledon, are taking on the 13,000 mile trip in order to raise £50,000 for War Child, which helps children in war zones.

The pair will set off on the route, which runs through 22 countries and will take a year to complete, on August 2.

Mr McDonald said: "Andy suggested we drive, and after a few beers I suggested cycling.

"It came as a surprise when I heard him say yes.

"We don't want to rush, we want to experience the different cultures."

The pair have cycled from Land's End to John O'Groats, but have never undertaken such an unusual venture.

Matt, who works for drinks company Innocent, said his cycling expertise comes from "covering my friend's paper round for two weeks" when he was 13, whilst Andy, an IT administrator, describes himself as "just a guy with an idea and a bike".

Mr McDonald said: "It's ambitious, but I'd rather aim high. I can't think of a worse situation [for a child to be in].

"We were easily convinced it was a great cause."

They have sponsorship from several companies, including bike company Van Nicholas - but are funding most of the expedition themselves, despite both giving up their jobs.

Mr McDonald said every single penny raised will go straight to the charity. The daring duo are also encouraging people to join them en route.

Mr McDonald added: "We thought we might get a bit bored with each others company after a year."

The pair will be uploading diaries, photos and videos to their website – www.thecyclediaries.com – where you can also follow their progress on a map via GPS.
