Rowers marked their hard work raising money to pay for eight new boats with a special champagne celebration.

The Putney Town Rowing Club held a naming ceremony on Saturday, during which champagne was poured over the new boats as they were each named after past club members in honour of their contribution to the club.

David Kingston, club committee member and assistant treasurer, said: “One of the 4s was named after Martyn Silvester, a former member who sadly passed away.

“His widow and son attended so it was quite a touching ceremony.”

After the main event, more than 70 club members then headed to the club's boathouse in Richmond for a barbeque along with president of the boat club, John Comer and chairman Geoff Adams.
