The Mayor of London's decision to remove the western extension of the congestion charge zone will make journeys easier for many people in north Battersea, businesses hope.

The announcement followed a five-week consultation which attracted nearly 28,000 responses.

Almost nine out of 10 businesses had said they wanted the zone removed while two-thirds of individuals also backed the change.

In a survey of Wandsworth businesses this year, one third said the congestion charge had affected their trade.

Guy Senior, the council’s transport spokesman, said: "If you live close to the river in Battersea, the enlarged zone will have affected many of your regular journeys.

"We know too that many businesses in north Battersea were concerned about the impact on their daily operations. In the current climate businesses need all the help they can get.”

Measures aimed at easing congestion and smoothing traffic flow will include re-phasing traffic signals and streamlining road works.
