A runaway dog ducked under ticket barriers and tried to get on a train causing services to halt across south west London earlier.

The cream coloured dog, which looked like a mix between a ‘Lassie’ collie and a Scottish Terrier, was rescued by Southfields station staff before being handed over to the RSPCA for treatment this afternoon.

Wimbledon Times:

A member of the public said the dog ran down the road towards Southfields station before running under ticket barriers and attempting to board a District line train.

Station staff radioed each other to report the runaway dog which jumped onto the tracks and chased the train along the line before being injured.

Station staff rescued the injured dog before handing it over to RSPCA officers.

They called the RSPCA after spotting the animal on the tracks near the station.

From earlier: Obstruction halts District line trains between Putney Bridge and Wimbledon

Earlier reports mentioned an obstruction on the line and there were no District line trains between Putney Bridge and Wimbledon while the animal was rescued.

The service was suspended and there were severe delays on the line all the way to Edgware Road.

A normal service has since been resumed.

A spokeswoman from Transport for London said it was called to reports of an injured dog and trains were stopped between 2.29pm and 2.49pm as a precaution.

The member of the public said: "It was a really cute dog.

"I thought it must have been trying to get home.

"It was quite amusing at first but then I got worried when I saw it go on the tracks."

She said she could not see a collar on the dog and there was no owner in sight.
