Battersea Arts Centre will receive a £1m Government grant after it was ravaged by fire.

A blaze tore through the Grade II* listed building, on March, Friday 13.

The Grand Hall, at the back of the building, renovated only a few years ago, is now a burnt-out carcass with smashed windows and no roof.

Chancellor George Osborne said people across London were sad to hear about the recent fire and added: “We are today making an additional £1m contribution to help restore the centre to its former glory so that it can continue its great work in showcasing arts and culture to 100,000 people each year.”

Culture secretary, Sajid Javid, visited the centre on Monday, March 16.

He said: “The Arts Centre are having to divert all their available resources into dealing with the aftermath and so I am pleased to be able to confirm that Government will provide £1 million towards the ongoing redevelopment work to help get this important south London venue back on track.”

Battersea MP Jane Ellison said: "I asked Ministers for help at this critical time for Battersea Arts Centre so am hugely grateful for this support which will help enormously with the restoration of a building that is an integral part of Battersea's past and present."

The Government, through Arts Council England, has already contributed £4.69m to the redevelopment of Battersea Arts Centre.
