A broken set of traffic lights is leaving motorists having to either jump a red light or perform a dangerous u-turn.

The lights, on Brighton Road at the junction of Farthing Way in Coulsdon, are intermittently stuck on red despite neighbouring traffic lights completing a full cycle.

It means motorists unaware of the problem must either risk an accident by jumping the lights or somehow perform a u-turn and find another route.

Martin King reported the fault to Transport for London on February 28 but the issue has still not been fixed.

To demonstrate the danger of the problem, the 42-year-old decided to film cars struggling to cross the junction as the lights remain on red.

The video shows the driver in two minds as to whether he should jump the lights.

And when he tentatively tries, there is almost an accident and so he eventually turns around.

Mr King said: “I stopped by there again on the way home on March 7 and they were still sticking on red, eventually two cars got fed up and jumped the light.

“They only have seconds to clear the junction before the A23 lights go green so this is incredibly dangerous.

“The lights did eventually go green and then seemed to carry on working as they should for a while so it looks like the fault may be intermittent.

“The road is particularly busy in the mornings with people coming to London from Brighton.

“It would be better if all the lights were broken because people would expect it.

“But the other lights go green so they are not expecting somebody to jump the lights.

“I posted the video in the hope of getting TfL into action.”

Mr King, who lives in Caterham, received an automated response from TfL and was told he would get a reply in 10 working days but is yet to hear back.
