A university student who died after coming off his motorcycle was seen performing a wheelie minutes before he crashed, an inquest heard.

Solomon Alinda died after crashing on Sumner Road, West Croydon, at around 2pm on May 6.

The 22-year-old of Parchmore Road, Thornton Heath, was pronounced dead at the scene after suffering severe head injuries in the crash.

Kevin Holloway of Catford traffic collision investigation unit told Croydon Coroners Court, witnesses reported seeing Mr Alinda pull a wheelie or power lift, which lifts the front of the bike as the rider changes gear, seconds before he pulled away.

Mr Holloway explained he had found marks at the scene which indicated Mr Alinda's bike had come into contact with the kerb, before sliding down the road.

He said: "I found blue paint on the pavement which indicated the motorcycle had toppled over and been travelling at speed.

"When the motorcycle ended up on its side and started to slide down the road it was travelling between 51mph and 59mph. The speed limit on that road is 30mph."

When the former Selhurst School for Boys pupil, who was in his second year at Ravensbourne University in Greenwich, came off his bike the back of his head struck a boundary wall between Sumner Road and Croydon Grove.

Recording a verdict of accidental death, Coroner Roy Palmer said: "I conclude he died an accidental death. I am sorry you lost your son in very sad circumstances."
