They seem to go hand in hand every year - New Year’s fireworks celebrations and UFO sightings.

Whether people are mistaking Chinese lanterns for alien spaceships, or little green men are using the cloak of fireworks to venture out into the night sky, unusual sightings always seem to appear during the New Year festivities.

This week Vincent from New Malden contacted the Surrey Comet to say he and his wife saw about 15 red and white aeroplane-like objects at 12.20am on New Year’s Day.

He said: “There were two or three lights appearing at the same time, going at quite a fast speed, without making any noise.

“They would be visible for about 15 to 20 seconds before disappearing into the horizon. These lights had the speed, trajectory and the altitude of a plane.”

Lisa Stokke Jolly, from Kingston, said she and her husband could see the objects travelling towards Kingston town centre.

She said: “We suddenly saw a slow moving object that seemed almost as if on fire, flying lower than common aircrafts, gliding silently, and in a curved pattern away from Dinton field.

“It seemed very odd to us, as we couldn’t quite explain what it was, and wasn’t likely anything we’ve seen before.”

And in Worcester Park, Dawn Holton reported a similar sighting and claimed she “could not believe” what she saw just two minutes after midnight on New Year’s Day.

She said: “It was very frustrating because myself and my family believe this was a significant UFO sighting of some magnitude and meaning.

“Who is out there monitoring this and what are their comments? What is happening?”
